Beautiful and diverse, the South Island of New Zealand is unlike any other place in the world. To travel from the top to the bottom of the South Island is to witness a variation of landscapes and natural features. From small towns to open expanses, each kilometre travelled promises new sights, new smells and new adventure. A sensory indulgence, the South Island is yours to roam and explore, to see, to taste and to experience.
The best way to do all of this is undoubtedly with a motorhome. No other method of travel allows you the freedom to experience the South Island in all of its glory. Imagine waking up with the sun in the Abel Tasman. With no check out time to adhere to, you take a leisurely breakfast in your motorhome then head to the golden sand and inviting water. A quick swim and play, it’s back to the motorhome to get showered and changed before heading down the road to discover the next place of interest.
The roads are uncluttered and it won’t be unusual to find yourself the only vehicle travelling, allowing you a feeling of having a personal connection with New Zealand and existing in a time and place which is unique to you and your travelling companions. Where and when to stop next is up to you and with a fully equipped Kitchen there is no need to find a cafe. You simply pull over, stretch your legs, take some photos and have something to eat and drink before continuing down the road. During the day you’ll pass places that exude character and their own unique charm. It’s your choice where to stop for the night. The next morning you do it all again. Different scenery, different places, different people, but the same undeniable sense of freedom and adventure.
From the Glacier Towns of Franz Josef and Fox to the stunning Haast Pass, down to the lakes and mountain views of Wanaka and Queenstown, there is wonder and excitement at every turn, fun and adventure around every corner. You can stand at the bottom of the country in Bluff and look out over the sea whilst enjoying the world famous oysters. There’s the crayfish in Kaikoura and the beer or chocolate in Dunedin. The vineyards of Central Otago boast some the world’s greatest Pinot Noir and the sun-kissed vines in Marlborough produce startlingly good Sauvignon Blanc.
We highly recommend the following Road Trips in the South Island:
Frank Josef to Haast – The mountains on one side, the ocean on the other, it’s no wonder The Lonely Planet ranked this one of the top roads to travel in the world
Queenstown to Lake Tekapo – Gaze in wonder at the shimmering blue water set against a spectacular mountain back drop
Balclutha to Invercargill – Follow the rugged southern coastline and journey through the Catlins for a taste of Southern life
