In the early 1980’s computers were not nearly as affordable as they are today. When John and Trisha Liddell decided they needed a computer in 1983 for their business they set about trying to find an affordable second hand one to suit their needs. They were pointed towards a small, Wellington based motorhome rental company. Whilst the computer topped the shopping list, the Liddell’s soon let their mind wander past this to the motorhomes that they saw. Very soon, not only had they purchased the computer they needed, but also 3 motorhomes, a small office and one very big challenge.
Right from the start John & Trisha placed an emphasis on quality and service. They set about learning what clients wanted in their motorhomes and the terms and conditions that came with it. Deciding they wanted to try and set themselves apart from other operators by offering a quality product with honest terms and conditions they began to form Pacific Horizon Motorhomes as they wanted it. They very much believed that businesses should fundamentally operate in a manner that is open and straightforward with no hidden clauses, costs or catches and used this as a basis to persuade clients through the doors of their motorhomes.
Before long their fledgling company started to expand as word got around that Pacific Horizon Motorhomes could be relied upon to deliver a quality product with great service. The straightforward terms and conditions were appreciated by those sceptical of companies hiding costs as Tourism expanded quickly in New Zealand and companies looked to cash in on the growing trend.
Over the years the product developed and the size of the company grew, reflecting a growing reputation as a premier provider of campervans. These days, Pacific Horizon now has over 400 motorhomes, with 4 nationwide locations. As well as Auckland and Christchurch, Pacific Horizon is the only operator to have a Picton location and a dedicated Wellington location.
Pacific Horizon has been at the forefront of the motorhome industry now for almost a quarter of a century. This place has been solidified by such innovations as the forward facing seats on offer in the 6 berth motorhome. One of the first operators in the world to offer a carbon offset scheme, recent progress has seen Pacific Horizon continue to lead the way, this time with environmental efforts, the company also gaining Green Globe status and Green Fleet accreditation.
Over the years many things have changed. The vehicles are not just good quality but now are of the very best quality and provide a benchmark for other companies to try and match. The service has retained its personalised feel and Pacific Horizon still has that same family feel that it started with. John and Trisha, since retired, continue to provide input as their interest is represented as major shareholders.
One other thing that has not changed? Honest terms and conditions. Pacific Horizon is the only major motorhome rental company that does not debit your credit card for a security bond. There are still no hidden costs or clauses. The honesty and integrity that has been with Pacific Horizon since day one continues to provide the cornerstone for the company that has become New Zealand’s premier motorhome operator.
